“Our House” in Parktown North, Johannesburg is our secret house, our sanctuary at the bottom of a panhandle site surrounded by trees. An original 60’s ranch house, we loved its stone walls, knotty pine ceilings and expanses of sliding timber and glass doors.
But . . .the bedrooms and reception rooms were too small, the bathrooms were badly arranged, small and dark and there were no decent cupboards. We needed a separate space for kids and a veranda that was weather proof. The house also felt a bit short.
But . . .we wanted to retain the character.
And so . . . we raised the front half of the roof to allow north light in and a view of the sky. We moved the glass ‘walls’ out and the passage one bay over. We added a proper veranda and updated the bathrooms. Skylights were added to wash the stone walls with light and brighten the bathrooms. We created a luxurious master suite and added a large room upstairs with en-suite that we use as a family study and lounge area.
A quiet, natural palate of materials was chosen as well as materials with a low embodied energy and environmentally sustainable characteristics – slate floors and stone walls to match
We have installed a solar water heating system and tanks to collect rainwater. We have planted new trees and landscaped the garden.
We love our secret house nestled in Parktown North …coming home every day is a pleasure!
